25.04.18.Today News : YouTuber Jailed for Revealing Miryang Rape Suspects / Drug Warrant Sought for Lee Cheol-gyu’s Son
A YouTuber known as "The Executioner," who revealed the identities of perpetrators involved in the "Miryang middle school gang rape case" without their consent, has been sentenced to prison.
On April 18, the Changwon District Court’s Criminal Division 6 (Presiding Judge Woo Sang-beom) sentenced Mr. A (in his 20s), the operator of the YouTube channel, to three years in prison for charges including defamation under the Information and Communications Network Act and obstruction of business. The court also ordered the forfeiture of 5.66 million KRW.
The court also sentenced Mr. B (in his 30s), who helped with video production, to two years and six months in prison.
From June to August last year, Mr. A uploaded videos on his channel that disclosed personal information of individuals suspected to be perpetrators, without their consent.
Additionally, Mr. A and others were charged with interfering with business by revealing, without filters, personal information related to restaurants operated by the families of the accused.
Mr. A continued producing these videos based on internet search results and unverified tips from anonymous sources as public interest in the case increased, which led to harm for those involved.
Currently, all related videos have been removed from the channel.
The judge stated, “Our society can no longer tolerate the phenomenon of spreading fake information through YouTube or social media. Strict punishment is necessary to ensure a minimum level of credibility.”
However, the court also considered that “the defendants paid or deposited 40 million KRW and 15 million KRW respectively to the victims” as part of the sentencing rationale.
A separate YouTuber known as “Combat Rabbit,” who faces similar charges and for whom prosecutors have requested a five-year sentence, is scheduled for sentencing on May 23.
Prosecutors have requested an arrest warrant for the son of People Power Party lawmaker Lee Cheol-gyu on charges of drug use.
According to legal sources, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office filed for the warrant on April 18, following a request from the Gangnam Police Station. The son, Mr. Lee, is being investigated for marijuana use and possession under the Narcotics Control Act.
Warrants were also reportedly sought for two accomplices of Mr. Lee.
However, his wife, who was also named as a suspect, is not believed to have had a warrant requested against her.
In October last year, Mr. Lee was apprehended by police after attempting but failing to retrieve liquid marijuana hidden in a flowerbed in Seocho District, using the so-called “dead drop” method.
Subsequently, based on the National Forensic Service's findings showing a positive result for marijuana in his hair sample, police expanded the investigation to determine whether he had smoked or ingested the drug.
It was also revealed that Mr. Lee had previously been referred to the prosecution on similar marijuana-related charges but was not indicted at the time.
