Coupang Data Breach Compensation Sparks Backlash Despite 50,000 KRW Pledge

📍Customers say real compensation amounts to less than 10,000 KRW due to coupon-only scheme

Coupang has announced a compensation plan worth 1.685 trillion KRW for a massive personal data breach affecting approximately 33.7 million users, but public anger is growing as the compensation comes in the form of restricted discount coupons rather than cash.

Coupang announced a compensation plan, but criticism is mounting that while the nominal amount is 50,000 won per person, the actual compensation is less than 10,000 won.

🔹 Compensation Requires Spending on Coupang Again
Coupang said it will provide compensation worth 50,000 KRW per person to current, former, and withdrawn members starting January 15. However, the compensation consists entirely of discount coupons usable only on Coupang’s platform.

The coupons include 5,000 KRW for general Coupang purchases, 5,000 KRW for Coupang Eats, 20,000 KRW for Coupang Travel, and 20,000 KRW for the luxury service R.LUX.

🔹 “Real Benefit Is Only 5,000–10,000 KRW”
Consumers argue that only the 5,000 KRW coupons for Coupang shopping and food delivery offer any practical value. Many users do not use food delivery services, and the minimum purchase amounts often exceed the coupon value, requiring additional spending.

As a result, critics say the actual compensation is far less than advertised.

🔹 Marketing Disguised as Compensation?
The inclusion of Coupang Travel and R.LUX coupons has drawn particular criticism. These services offer mostly high-priced products, making it difficult to use the coupons without extra spending.

Online communities accuse Coupang of using the compensation plan as a promotional tool rather than a sincere effort to compensate victims.

🔹 Executive Accountability Questioned
Despite apologies from Coupang executives, public trust remains low. Interim CEO Harold Rogers described the plan as a “responsible action,” but consumers question whether such limited benefits meet that standard.

Founder Kim Beom-seok’s decision not to attend a National Assembly hearing has further fueled criticism.

🔹 Political Pressure and Ongoing Investigation
Lawmakers have called the plan misleading and are considering a full investigation. Consumer experts also doubt whether the compensation reflects genuine accountability.

Meanwhile, police are accelerating forensic analysis of seized evidence as part of the ongoing investigation into the data breach.

One-line summary : Coupang’s coupon-based compensation plan for a massive data breach is facing backlash as consumers argue the real benefits fall far short of the promised amount.
