[26.01.13] Triclosan Detected: 25 Million Units of 2080 Toothpaste Recalled Nationwide
📍Aekyung Industry Begins Voluntary Recall of Six China-Made Products Manufactured After April 2023
Approximately 25 million units of Aekyung Industry’s “2080” toothpaste containing triclosan, a preservative banned from oral-care products, were distributed nationwide. The company has initiated a full recall and refund process.

🔹 Triclosan Detected in Products Manufactured After April 2023
According to industry sources on the 13th, Aekyung Industry confirmed through an internal investigation that triclosan, a prohibited preservative, was detected in some “2080” toothpaste products manufactured after April 2023.
Total production during this period amounted to approximately 31 million units. Excluding around 6 million units stored in warehouses, about 25 million units had already been distributed to the market.
🔹 More Than 80% Were Small-Sized Products
Approximately 82% of the distributed products were small-sized items, including 4g single-use packets and 20g and 50g tubes. Household-use toothpaste accounted for about 4.5 million units, or 18% of the total distribution.
Aekyung Industry stated that while not all products manufactured during the period contained triclosan, the company decided to recall all distributed products to prioritize consumer safety.
🔹 Six China-Manufactured “2080” Products Subject to Recall
The recalled products were all manufactured by Domy in China and imported and sold by Aekyung Industry:
– 2080 Basic Toothpaste
– 2080 Daily Care Toothpaste
– 2080 Smart Care Plus Toothpaste
– 2080 Classic Care Toothpaste
– 2080 Triple Effect Alpha Fresh Toothpaste
– 2080 Triple Effect Alpha Strong Toothpaste
Aekyung Industry has maintained business relations with Domy since 2020.
🔹 Manufacturing Process Lapses Led to Contamination
Aekyung Industry said Domy explained that production lines were not fully separated, resulting in cross-contamination between materials and equipment. Inadequate cleaning and disinfection of facilities and pipelines were also confirmed, along with the use of triclosan during sanitation of the water system.
The company added that it is conducting further verification, stating that the explanation provided was insufficient.
🔹 Triclosan Banned from Oral-Care Products Since 2016
Triclosan, once widely used as a preservative, has been banned from toothpaste and all oral-care products in South Korea since 2016 due to concerns over endocrine disruption and other health risks.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety ordered the recall on the 5th following Aekyung Industry’s report of triclosan detection.
Aekyung Industry emphasized that all toothpaste products not included in the recall are domestically manufactured and meet safety and quality standards.
