[26.03.11] Musical Actor Nam Kyung-joo Referred to Prosecutors Over Sexual Assault Allegation
📍Police cite “quasi-rape by abuse of authority”…actor denies allegations
South Korean musical actor Nam Kyung-joo has been referred to prosecutors without detention over allegations of sexual assault. Police said they determined the charges were supported by evidence and victim testimony, while Nam reportedly denied the accusations.

🔹 Police refer case to prosecutors
According to Bangbae Police Station in Seoul, Nam was referred to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office last month on charges of quasi-rape by abuse of authority.
The charge typically applies when a suspect uses social status or influence to overpower a victim’s free will in a sexual context.
🔹 Victim reported incident after escaping scene
Nam is accused of attempting to sexually assault a woman at a location in Seoul last year.
The alleged victim reportedly felt threatened during the incident, escaped the scene, and immediately contacted emergency services.
Police launched an investigation following the report.
🔹 Police say evidence supports charges
Investigators later questioned Nam as a suspect and reviewed statements and other evidence.
Based on the findings, police concluded there was sufficient basis to send the case to prosecutors.
Further investigation could continue during the prosecutorial review.
🔹 Actor denies allegations
Nam reportedly strongly denied the allegations during police questioning.
He acknowledged that an investigation was underway but declined to comment on specific accusations.
🔹 Social media account deleted
Following the news, Nam’s personal social media account was found to be closed as of Wednesday afternoon.
No official statement has yet been released through his agency or other formal channels.
🔹 Veteran musical actor
Nam Kyung-joo debuted in the Korean production of “Porgy and Bess” in 1994.
He has since appeared in numerous musicals including “Chicago,” “Mamma Mia,” and “Wicked,” building a career spanning more than four decades.
He currently serves as an associate professor in the Department of Performing Arts at Hongik University.
🔹 Past drunk driving incidents
Nam also previously faced legal issues related to driving violations.
His driver’s license was revoked twice for drunk driving in 2002 and 2003. In 2004, he was again investigated for driving without a license.
