25.04.07.Today News : Lee Cheol-gyu Lawmaker’s Son Tests Positive for Marijuana / Nurse Investigated Over Newborn Abuse Posts
Lee Cheol-gyu, a lawmaker from the People Power Party, is facing controversy as his son, Mr. Lee (in his 30s), tested positive for marijuana in a forensic drug test.
On April 7, the Seocho Police Station in Seoul announced that it had received hair test results from the National Forensic Service confirming a positive reaction for marijuana use.
Mr. Lee is accused of attempting to retrieve liquid marijuana hidden in a residential area flower bed using a “throw-off” delivery method in October last year. He allegedly committed the act with two others, including his wife, using a rental car to visit the scene. CCTV footage confirmed all three were present at the location.
Although he tested negative in an initial rapid drug test after his arrest, the police have since requested detailed drug testing for his wife and other accomplices and are currently investigating the exact circumstances.
The police previously faced criticism for delaying the arrest. Though a report was filed in October via the emergency hotline (112), the suspect was identified only on January 3, and Mr. Lee was apprehended nearly two months later on March 25. Authorities stated the delay was due to legal procedures and tracking efforts.
Lawmaker Lee commented that the police had held onto the case for months and suddenly detained his son on February 25 without verifying the full situation, accusing them of trying to publicly disgrace him. He claimed the incident was politically motivated and suggested that fans of former PPP leader Han Dong-hoon (“Han-ddal”) were behind the smear campaign.
Nonetheless, he apologized, saying, “I am deeply sorry that my child was involved in such an unfortunate matter. I, too, take moral responsibility.”
A nurse in her 20s from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Daegu Catholic University Hospital is under investigation for suspected child abuse after posting disturbing comments about newborns on social media.
On April 4, Daegu police conducted a search and seizure of the nurse's home and mobile phone, suspecting her of violating child welfare laws.
The nurse allegedly uploaded photos of NICU babies to her social media, including captions such as “I feel like dropping them,” causing outrage online.
The father of one affected newborn has filed a police complaint against the nurse and the hospital director.
The police stated that Daegu Catholic University Hospital cooperated fully with the investigation and that no separate search of the hospital was needed. They are also looking into allegations involving additional suspects and victims.
After the incident became public, the hospital released an official apology video on its YouTube channel on April 5.
Hospital Director Kim Yoon-young expressed deep regret, saying, “We sincerely apologize for the distress caused by the inappropriate actions of a nurse in our NICU. We especially apologize to the parents who entrusted their precious children to us.”
He confirmed that the nurse did in fact post inappropriate captions alongside newborn photos and added, “Such behavior can never be justified under any circumstance.”
The hospital has immediately suspended the nurse and decided on severe disciplinary measures. They also pledged full cooperation with ongoing investigations and expressed their commitment to restoring public trust.
