1. "99 Chinese spies arrested" Sky Daily raid

Police have launched a criminal investigation into Sky Daily, a far-right internet media outlet that reported the arrest of 99 Chinese spies.

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Cyber Investigation Division said it raided Sky Daily's offices in Jung-gu, Seoul, and its reporters for about three hours from 9 a.m. on Sept. 9.

They are under police investigation for allegedly interfering with the work of the National Election Commission by publishing false articles (obstruction of official duties by hierarchy and defamation).

Sky Daily, which produced fake news, was raided.

Earlier, on January 16, Skydaily reported that "martial law forces handed over 99 Chinese spies arrested at an election training center in a joint operation with the U.S. military and transferred them to a U.S. military base in Okinawa, Japan, where they confessed to all charges of election meddling during interrogation.

On January 16, Skydaily reported in an article titled ‘99 Chinese spies arrested at election training center sent to U.S. base in Okinawa, Japan’ that “South Korean and U.S. military authorities have sent Chinese spies arrested by the Suwon City Election Commission in Gyeonggi Province to a U.S. military base in Okinawa, Japan.”

The Election Commission and U.S. Forces Korea denied the story outright, but SkyDaily did not correct the report. On the 20th of the same month, the Election Commission filed a police complaint against the media outlet.

Controversy later erupted when Skydaily's source was revealed to be Mr. Ahn Byung-hee, 42, a supporter of former President Yoon Seok-yeol and a “Captain America” who falsely claimed to be from the US military.

2. Father who sexually assaulted daughter gets 25 years in prison

A man in his 70s who sexually assaulted his biological daughter for more than 40 years and also sexually assaulted his granddaughter was sentenced to a severe prison term.

On March 7, the Cheonan District Court's Cheonan Branch 1 Criminal Division (Presiding Judge Jeon Kyung-ho) sentenced A, a man in his 70s, to 25 years in prison for violating the Special Act on Punishment of Sexual Offenses (Rape by Kinship).

The court imposed a sentence that was more severe than the recommended sentence (10 to 21 years and 4 months) set by the sentencing guidelines.

“This crime is unimaginable in our society, which has always been oriented toward the protection of individual freedom and human rights,” the former presiding judge criticized, adding, “It can have a profound social impact by arousing deep doubts about human nature.”

"The defendant deprived the victims of the opportunity to enjoy a normal and happy life, " the court said, adding, "It seems even more tragic that the mother and daughter had no choice but to look at the suffering that each other went through."

The court added, "Nevertheless, the defendant stubbornly denies the crime, and it is impossible to know whether he feels the slightest remorse."

Previously, A sexually assaulted his daughter, B, 277 times over a period of more than 40 years, from 1985 until recently. Ms. B became pregnant four times and had an abortion.

Mr. A also sexually assaulted Ms. C, his biological daughter and granddaughter, whom he impregnated and gave birth to. This was before Ms. C was 10 years old.

The prosecutor charged Mr. A with violating the Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Offenses (Rape by Kinship) and other charges.

In court, Mr. A denied the charges against him. He said, “I don't remember committing the sexual assault because I was drunk,” and he denied any relationship with Ms. C.

However, the court found him guilty based on the results of DNA analysis and the consistency of the victim's statement.
