A 14-year-old middle school student in Dongducheon, Gyeonggi Province, has touched hearts nationwide after giving 30,000 won of his emergency savings to an elderly woman selling produce in the blazing heat. A video capturing the moment has gone viral, surpassing 800,000 views online.

On July 7, a citizen who runs a crafts shop in Dongducheon uploaded a video to Instagram showing a young boy in school uniform speaking with an elderly woman selling vegetables on the roadside. The video shows the student briefly leaving and returning with change to complete the purchase. His kind act quickly gained attention, with the post garnering over 800,000 views.
According to the person who filmed the scene, the elderly woman occasionally sells homegrown produce near the shop. “I saw the boy approach her, ask about the vegetables and prices, and try to pay, but they didn’t have change,” they said. “Eventually, the boy took the woman by the hand and went to a nearby store to break his bill, returning to give her money.”
The boy was identified as Ok (14), a second-year student at Dongducheon Middle School. On his way home from school, he met the elderly vendor and offered her 30,000 won from the 50,000-won emergency fund he had been saving from pocket change. Ok doesn’t receive regular allowances and had been carefully saving the money for emergencies.
Initially intending to give the money without taking anything, he accepted a bag of beans at the woman’s request. He then politely bowed several times before leaving.
In an interview, Ok said, “It was so hot that day, I just wanted the grandmother to sell her goods quickly and go home to rest,” adding, “I had been saving that money for something important, and I felt that this was the right time to use it.”
Netizens praised the student’s act of kindness, with comments like, “This is the kind of youth that warms our society,” and “His parents must be proud.” Some civic and educational organizations are reportedly planning to recognize Ok for his thoughtful gesture.
