A Korean man in his 40s who had gone missing during a trip to Cambodia was found in a coma one week after his disappearance.

🔹Found unconscious a week after disappearance
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lee (42), an office worker from Jeonju, was located at Kosamak Hospital’s intensive care unit in Phnom Penh. The Korean Embassy in Cambodia informed his family that Lee is currently unconscious and receiving intensive treatment.

His family immediately booked a flight to Phnom Penh, saying, “We just want to bring him home alive and continue his treatment in Korea. We’re asking the government to help.”

🔹Mysterious disappearance and last GPS signal near a hotel
Lee left for Phnom Penh on September 24 for a six-day trip, but contact was lost just three days after his departure.
His family later traced his last GPS signal to a hotel in Phnom Penh, but local guides confirmed that he had never checked in.

Korean and Cambodian authorities are jointly investigating the cause and circumstances of his disappearance.

🔹Government raises travel alert for Cambodia
Amid growing safety concerns, the South Korean government has raised the travel advisory for Phnom Penh to Level 2 (“Refrain from travel”) and issued special travel warnings for Sihanoukville, Kampot’s Bokor Mountain, and Bavet.
Other areas remain under Level 1 (“Exercise caution”), and additional consular staff have been deployed to Cambodia to handle the case.

A ministry official urged, “Korean nationals should minimize movement in affected areas and stay informed about local safety conditions.”

🔹Family’s plea: “He’s alive, and that’s what matters”
Lee’s family expressed relief mixed with fear, saying, “We were terrified we might never see him again. We’re grateful he’s alive but need urgent help to bring him home.” Medical staff reportedly suspect dehydration and severe exhaustion as possible causes of his coma, but further tests are underway.

The Korean Embassy is now coordinating with the hospital to determine the feasibility of transferring Lee back to Korea for treatment.

The case highlights persistent safety risks for Korean nationals in Southeast Asia and exposes weaknesses in overseas traveler protection systems. Swift cooperation between both governments is critical not only for Lee’s recovery but also for restoring confidence in citizen safety abroad.

One-line summary : A 42-year-old Korean man missing in Cambodia was found in a coma after a week, prompting his family to rush to Phnom Penh.
