📍TBS Journalist Eats Frozen Ramen with Bare Hands as ‘Ramen Freezing Challenge’ Spreads Online
As wind chill temperatures plunged to around minus 20 degrees Celsius nationwide, a Japanese reporter has drawn attention by sharing a firsthand experience of tearing apart and eating a completely frozen bowl of “Han River ramen” to demonstrate Seoul’s extreme cold.

🔹 Japanese TBS Reporter Experiences Seoul’s Cold Firsthand
Japan’s TBS News program N-Star reported on the longest cold wave to hit the Japanese archipelago on the 22nd, while also covering South Korea’s severe winter conditions.
The broadcast featured a Japanese reporter visiting Seoul, wearing a long black padded coat, as he stopped by a convenience store near the Han River to cook a bowl of “Han River ramen.” He explained, “To verify just how cold Korea is, I prepared Han River ramen, a symbol of Seoul,” adding, “I will test how long it takes for the ramen to freeze.”
🔹 Ramen Freezes Solid with Chopsticks in Two Hours
Approximately two hours after the experiment began, the ramen had completely frozen while the noodles were still lifted by chopsticks. The broth, noodles, and chopsticks froze together, creating a scene in which the ramen appeared to be floating in midair.
The reporter remarked, “It looks as if time has stopped, as though the chopsticks are suspended in the air.” He then tore off pieces of the frozen ramen with his bare hands and tasted it, saying, “It’s completely frozen. All I can taste is powder when I chew.”
🔹 Seoul Records Minus 13°C, Coldest Day of the Winter
On the day of the experiment, Seoul’s lowest temperature dropped to minus 13 degrees Celsius, marking the coldest day of the winter season.
As an Arctic cold wave continued, morning temperatures on the 24th remained below freezing across most regions. As of 5 a.m., minimum temperatures reached minus 17.3°C in Hyangnobong, Gangwon Province; minus 17.1°C in Imnam, Cheorwon; and minus 16.1°C in Panmunjeom, Paju. Seoul recorded minus 7.0°C, Chuncheon minus 7.5°C, Mudeungsan minus 6.2°C, Daegu and Ulsan minus 4.3°C, and Daejeon minus 3.5°C.
Daytime highs were forecast to range between minus 5°C and 6°C, with strong winds expected to lower perceived temperatures further. On Sunday the 25th, temperatures are expected to remain frigid, with lows between minus 18°C and minus 2°C and highs between minus 6°C and 6°C.
🔹 Viral on Social Media and Rise of the ‘Ramen Freezing Challenge’
The video quickly spread across Japanese and South Korean social media platforms, garnering high view counts. Online users commented, “This isn’t Han River ramen, it’s cold wave ramen,” “Did the staff really hold the chopsticks for two hours?”, “I laughed for two hours watching this,” and “Eating that—what incredible professional dedication.”
Recently, a “ramen freezing challenge,” in which people leave hot ramen outdoors to freeze, has gained popularity online. Numerous short-form videos and photos showing frozen ramen have been shared on YouTube Shorts and Instagram, drawing interest from overseas users as a vivid demonstration of Korea’s extreme cold.
