[26.02.01] Taebaeksan Snow Festival Food Stall Hygiene Controversy Over Makgeolli Bottle
📍Plastic bottle immersed directly in soup…Taebaek City orders immediate shutdown and removal
A hygiene controversy has erupted at the Taebaeksan Snow Festival, one of Korea’s 대표 winter festivals. As criticism spread, Taebaek City announced that it conducted an emergency inspection and removed the problematic food stall.

🔹 Hygiene controversy sparked by Instagram video
The controversy began with a short video posted on Instagram on the 31st. The video, filmed by a netizen identified as A, who visited a nearby food stall after attending the Taebaeksan Snow Festival, showed a vendor engaging in unhygienic behavior.
In the video, the stall owner is seen placing a plastic bottle of makgeolli directly into a pot of fish cake soup after a customer complained that the drink had frozen.
🔹 Fish cake soup served as-is…vendor says “I only dipped it briefly”
The bigger issue was that the fish cake skewers and broth from the same pot were later served directly to customers. When the person filming protested, the vendor could be heard saying, “It was frozen, so I only dipped it briefly.”
A stated, “They put a completely frozen plastic makgeolli bottle straight into the fish cake soup pot. I saw them do it twice in just five minutes. I really wish they wouldn’t run a business like this with food.”
🔹 Video surpasses 4 million views, public backlash grows
The video surpassed 4 million views within a day of being posted and quickly spread online. Netizens criticized the incident, saying, “This is why I avoid food at domestic festivals,” “I don’t even want to go after seeing this,” and “This could release microplastics.”
🔹 Taebaek City: “Immediate removal and follow-up measures”
As criticism intensified, Taebaek City released an official statement on Instagram on the 1st. The city said, “We sincerely apologize for causing concern to visitors,” adding, “We conducted an emergency on-site inspection regarding hygiene issues at the fish cake and makgeolli stall and immediately ordered the suspension of business operations and removal of the facility.”
The city also stated that it would proceed with follow-up administrative measures in accordance with relevant laws.
🔹 Hygiene oversight to be strengthened for remainder of festival
Taebaek City emphasized, “We will take this incident as an opportunity to significantly strengthen hygiene inspections and supervision across the festival grounds for the remainder of the event to prevent similar issues from recurring.”
The Taebaeksan Snow Festival is being held at Taebaeksan National Park through the 8th of this month.
