[26.04.13] Choi Chung-yeon Controversy Over Insulting Fan Sparks Backlash
📍Past drunk driving controversy resurfaces as Lotte fans demand club action
Lotte Giants pitcher Choi Chung-yeon has come under fire for making an offensive remark toward a female fan. The controversy is intensifying as his past drunk driving record is being revisited.

🔹 Offensive remark caught on video…controversy spreads online
The controversy began on the 10th when a video spread across online communities and social media platforms. The footage showed Choi spending time outside a bar in Busan with acquaintances, including teammate Yoon Sung-bin.
While smoking outside, Choi reportedly made an insulting remark toward a female fan who had approached him for a photo, saying she was “worse than Hankook Tire,” in a derogatory reference to her appearance.
The video, filmed and uploaded by the victim herself, quickly circulated online, sparking widespread criticism.
🔹 Apology fails to calm backlash
Following the controversy, Choi reportedly contacted the victim directly and issued an apology. However, despite the original video being deleted, screenshots and descriptions continue to circulate online, prolonging the backlash.
Critics argue that the incident reflects not just a momentary lapse in judgment, but a deeper issue regarding his attitude toward fans, especially given that the remarks were made in a public setting.
🔹 Fans issue statement…“Fans are not decorations”
Some Lotte fans released a statement under the name “Busan Seagulls,” expressing strong dissatisfaction.
They emphasized that “fans are not decorative figures who only exist when the team performs well,” adding that true fans are those who remain loyal even during losing streaks and difficult times.
They further stated that insulting such fans undermines a player’s qualification to receive support, and urged the club to treat the matter as a serious issue concerning team discipline and organizational culture.
🔹 Past controversy resurfaces…drunk driving record
Choi has previously been involved in controversy. While playing for the Samsung Lions in 2020, he was caught driving under the influence in Daegu and was suspended for 150 games by the KBO and his club.
He later transferred to Lotte through the second draft in November last year, but this latest incident has once again placed him under scrutiny.
The situation is particularly sensitive given recent incidents involving Lotte players, including disciplinary issues related to illegal gambling establishments.
🔹 Performance struggles add to criticism
Choi has made only one appearance this season, recording two runs on three hits and one walk in one inning. Concerns over declining pitch velocity have also been raised, and he was subsequently removed from the first-team roster along with several teammates.
As controversies continue alongside performance issues, criticism is growing regarding his professionalism and sense of responsibility as a player.
