📍Police launch investigation after remains of child estimated to be 5 to 7 years old discovered at historic burial site
Police have launched an investigation after human remains believed to belong to a child were discovered at a cultural heritage excavation site in Cheongju. The remains were found during excavation work at a historic burial site that had once been used as a cemetery. Authorities plan to request a full forensic examination from the National Forensic Service to determine the exact cause and circumstances of death.

🔹 Child’s Remains Discovered During Cultural Heritage Excavation
According to police and local authorities on May 13, the remains were discovered at around 3 p.m. the previous day at the Myeongsimsan Tomb Complex excavation site in Sinbong-dong, Heungdeok District, Cheongju.
A member of the excavation team reportedly found the remains and immediately notified police.
Authorities believe the remains belong to a child estimated to be between five and seven years old. The remains were found approximately 60 centimeters below ground level and were reportedly wrapped in cloth or blanket-like material.
The site is a nationally designated cultural heritage area where archaeological excavation work has been underway. Police secured the scene and began preliminary forensic examinations following the discovery.
🔹 Area Was Previously Used as Cemetery
The location where the remains were discovered was previously used as a public cemetery.
The city of Cheongju has been carrying out land compensation and grave relocation procedures for the area over the past six years as part of a park development project. During that process, more than 200 graves were reportedly relocated.
Authorities currently believe the newly discovered remains may have been left behind during the relocation process. However, police said they are keeping all possibilities open until further investigation is completed.
A police official stated that the condition of the remains suggests they had been buried for a very long time and noted that investigators are carefully reviewing the area’s history as a former cemetery.
🔹 National Forensic Service to Conduct Examination
Police plan to request a forensic autopsy and detailed analysis from the National Forensic Service to determine the exact cause of death.
Because the remains are skeletal, investigators say it is difficult to determine the cause of death through visual inspection alone. Forensic specialists will analyze possible fractures, trauma, burial conditions, and estimated time of death.
Given that the remains appear to belong to a child, investigators are also examining whether the case may involve an accident or any criminal circumstances rather than a simple burial.
The results of the forensic examination are expected to play a key role in determining the future direction of the investigation.
🔹 Authorities Also Reviewing Site Management Procedures
The discovery has also drawn attention to management procedures surrounding archaeological excavation sites and former cemetery areas.
The Myeongsimsan Tomb Complex has long been considered historically and culturally significant, and both excavation and public park development projects have been taking place in the area.
Police and related authorities are continuing additional inspections around the discovery site and are reportedly considering expanding the excavation area in case more remains are found.
Authorities said final conclusions regarding the case will depend on the results of the forensic examination.
