Kim Sang-hoon, who is serving a life sentence for the infamous Ansan hostage and murder case, has received an additional six-month prison term for assaulting fellow inmates while incarcerated.

On June 12, the Busan District Court’s Criminal Division 5 (Presiding Judge Kim Hyun-soon) sentenced Kim Sang-hoon (56) to six months in prison for assaulting two fellow inmates in a correctional facility.
According to court findings, on the evening of September 13 last year, Kim attacked a fellow inmate in his 50s who was sleeping in the prison ward. He struck the inmate and stabbed him three times in the back of the head with a ballpoint pen. He also assaulted another inmate in his 40s who tried to intervene.
It was reported that Kim had a strained relationship with both victims prior to the attack.
The court stated, “The defendant’s actions are especially condemnable given that he is already serving a life sentence and should have exercised self-restraint.” The judge emphasized that the severity of the crime warranted additional imprisonment.
Kim was originally sentenced to life imprisonment for the 2015 Ansan murder case, in which he broke into his wife’s ex-husband’s home and killed both the ex-husband and his 16-year-old daughter after his wife failed to answer his calls. He also held the ex-husband’s partner and another daughter hostage for 23 hours before being apprehended.
Legal experts noted that this latest conviction could adversely affect Kim’s chances of parole or presidential pardon in the future.
