25.07.18.Today News : Top Student at Andong High Scored 40 on Math Without Leaked Test
A high school senior known for consistently ranking first at Seongchang Girls' High School in Andong shocked the public by scoring only 40 in math on her final exam—taken without access to leaked test papers. As the truth behind her academic performance comes to light, both the school community and the broader public are expressing outrage.

A scandal involving test paper leaks at Seongchang Girls’ High School in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, has rocked the local education community. The daughter of a parent who conspired with a former teacher and an administrative officer to steal exam papers scored only 40 in math and 80 in ethics during the recent final exams—raising questions about the legitimacy of her previous academic achievements.
The student, 18-year-old senior A, had maintained top rankings throughout high school, often scoring perfect marks or missing just one question. “It was hard to believe, considering her past performance,” said a school official.
Fellow parents reacted with anger. “Were all her grades fake?” one asked, while another added, “What about our daughters who stayed up all night studying?”
The incident came to light at 1:20 a.m. on July 4, when A’s mother, 48-year-old B, and 31-year-old C, a former contract teacher at the school, broke into the teachers’ office to steal test papers. The school’s security system was triggered, and though they fled the scene, they were arrested the next day. A third accomplice, administrative staffer D, was also taken into custody. D allegedly deleted CCTV footage and registered C’s fingerprints in the school’s security system at C’s request.
Authorities found that C, who had once been A’s homeroom teacher, began leaking test papers for every subject as soon as A entered high school. Reports suggest B paid over ₩20 million (approx. $14,500) in total for the stolen exams. C is also suspected of providing illegal private tutoring for A—currently under separate police investigation.
The school convened an academic evaluation committee on July 14 and decided to expel A. All of her previous grades were nullified and recorded as zero. The Andong District Court issued arrest warrants for C and B on July 14 and 15, respectively. Police also booked A without detention on July 16 for taking tests using stolen materials.
During interrogation, A claimed she noticed the test content was too similar but didn’t realize the papers had been stolen. The case has prompted widespread calls for stricter school security and transparency in academic evaluation.
