A mother of four lost consciousness while swimming at an outdoor pool in Paju, Gyeonggi Province. Fortunately, two Army NCOs on vacation quickly administered CPR, saving her life. They remained at the scene until the woman was safely transferred to medical professionals.

According to the Army’s 1st Infantry Division, Sergeant First Class Lee Hyun-sik (32) from the 1st Armored Battalion and Master Sergeant Sung Gyu-seok (35) from the 2nd Armored Brigade were enjoying a day at an outdoor pool in Paju with their families on July 13 when they spotted a woman lying motionless in the water.
Sensing something was wrong, the two immediately entered the water and pulled the woman out. She showed no signs of breathing or a pulse.
SFC Lee called 119 and relayed the woman’s condition to the emergency dispatcher in real-time. Meanwhile, MSG Sung performed continuous CPR until the paramedics arrived.
After approximately ten minutes of emergency care, the woman began breathing on her own. The soldiers assisted the emergency crew until she was safely transported to the hospital.
Their heroic actions came to light after the woman posted a heartfelt thank-you note on the national “People’s Sinmungo” (petition platform). Identifying herself as the mother of four, she expressed deep gratitude, saying, “Thanks to their quick response in such a dire situation, I’m alive and back with my children.”
Both NCOs humbly responded, “Anyone would have done the same in our place,” and added, “We’re grateful to have helped save a life, and we’ll always be ready to serve wherever we’re needed.”
Their story has since touched the hearts of many, showcasing the dedication and bravery of South Korea’s soldiers even outside their official duties.
