📍"Vehicle sped forward immediately after ferry arrival — Police investigate mechanical failure and driver negligence"
A tragic accident occurred on Udo Island, Jeju, where a rental van struck pedestrians, leaving three people dead and ten injured. The driver insists the vehicle suddenly accelerated, while police are analyzing eyewitness accounts and CCTV footage to determine the cause.

🔹 Accident Overview
At 2:47 p.m. on November 24, a Staria rental van driven by a 62-year-old tourist identified as A suddenly accelerated shortly after disembarking from a ferry at Cheonjin Port, Udo. The vehicle sped approximately 150 meters before crashing into a large road sign structure.
🔹 Casualties
A total of three people — a female passenger in her 60s, and two male pedestrians in their 60s and 70s — were transported to hospitals in cardiac arrest and later pronounced dead.
Ten others, including the driver, suffered serious or moderate injuries. All victims are believed to be domestic tourists.
🔹 Eyewitness Accounts
CCTV footage shows pedestrians turning their heads at an unusual noise before scrambling to escape. However, the van rapidly rushed forward, striking people on the walkway and only stopping after hitting a large metal road sign next to the terminal.
One witness stated:
“The car suddenly sped up from behind — people were lifted into the air and fell. It happened in seconds. There was no time to avoid it.”
Another victim’s husband recalled:
“My wife was thrown first and her leg was fractured. The van came like someone had lost control.”
🔹 Investigation Focus
Police confirmed the driver was not intoxicated, and the vehicle was a rental.
The driver claimed the incident was caused by "unintended acceleration" and that the brakes were unresponsive.
Authorities are reviewing:
■ CCTV and dashcam footage
■ Vehicle maintenance logs
■ Forensic vehicle analysis
■ Black box data
🔹 Safety Implications
The accident has raised questions about traffic safety protocols in tourist-heavy ferry terminals. Experts suggest that infrastructure reinforcement, improved pedestrian protections, and clearer emergency response measures may be necessary.
