📍Hanukkah-targeted terror attack in Australia followed by campus shooting in the U.S. shocks global community
At least 11 people were killed in a shooting attack targeting the Jewish community in Sydney, Australia, while a separate gun violence incident occurred at Brown University in the United States around the same time, sending shockwaves through the international community.

🔹 Terror Attack Targeting Jewish Community at Bondi Beach, Sydney
At around 5 p.m. on the 14th (local time), a mass shooting occurred near Bondi Beach, one of Sydney’s most popular tourist destinations. New South Wales (NSW) Police confirmed that at least 11 people, including one of the suspects, were killed in the incident and officially classified the attack as a terrorist act.
At the time of the shooting, a public event celebrating Hanukkah, a major Jewish holiday, was being held at a nearby park. Large crowds, including families and tourists, had gathered in the area. Authorities believe the attack was deliberately planned to target the Jewish community.
🔹 Eleven Dead, 29 Injured Including Police Officers
According to NSW Police, in addition to the 11 fatalities, 29 people were injured and transported to hospitals, including two police officers. Two suspects exchanged gunfire with police; one was killed at the scene, while the other was critically injured and taken into custody.
A senior police official told Australia’s ABC broadcaster that one of the deceased suspects was identified as Naveed Akram, a resident of Bonnyrigg in southwestern Sydney. Police are currently conducting a search of his residence as part of the investigation.
🔹 Improvised Explosive Device Found in Suspect Vehicle
Police also discovered an improvised explosive device (IED) inside a vehicle linked to the suspects near the scene. Authorities believe the attackers may have planned an additional bombing attack alongside the shooting.
Explosive ordnance disposal units were deployed, and police established evacuation zones while continuing a detailed search for any further suspicious items.
🔹 State Premier: “A Planned Attack on the First Day of Hanukkah”
NSW Premier Chris Minns stated that the attack was “a planned act of terror aimed at the Jewish community of Sydney on the first day of Hanukkah.” NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon added that based on the target, weapons used, and method of attack, the incident clearly met the criteria of a terrorist attack.
🔹 Shooting Also Reported at Brown University in the U.S.
Around the same period, a separate shooting occurred at Brown University, an Ivy League institution located in Providence, Rhode Island, in the eastern United States. At least two people were killed and eight others seriously injured.
According to CNN and local authorities, the shooting took place at approximately 4:05 p.m. on the 13th (local time). Brown University immediately issued emergency alerts urging students and staff to shelter indoors.
🔹 Suspect Still at Large, Campus Locked Down
As of six hours after the incident, the suspect had not been apprehended, and the Brown University campus remained under lockdown. Police identified the suspect as a man in his 30s wearing dark clothing and are searching campus buildings and surrounding areas.
The incident occurred during the university’s final exam period, and some students were reportedly taking exams at the time of the shooting.
🔹 Rising Global Concerns Over Gun Violence and Terror
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the Sydney attack as “shocking and horrifying” and convened an emergency national security meeting. In the United States, more than 70 school shooting incidents have been reported this year alone, according to CNN.
The near-simultaneous shootings in Australia and the U.S. have raised renewed concerns worldwide over terrorism, gun violence, and public safety.
