[26.03.16] Hamyang Wildfire Arsonist Revealed as Notorious “Bongdaesan Fire Squirrel”
📍Man Responsible for Over 90 Fires in Ulsan Reoffends After Serving 10-Year Prison Term, First Major Wildfire of the Year Burned 234 Hectares

🔹Arrest of Hamyang Wildfire Suspect
The Criminal Investigation Unit of the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency announced on March 16 that it had arrested and detained a man in his 60s on charges of violating the Forest Protection Act.
He is accused of setting fire to a hillside in Changwon-ri, Macheon-myeon, Hamyang County last month.
Investigators believe he committed three separate arson incidents this year, including fires in Namwon, North Jeolla Province, and other mountainous areas in Hamyang.
🔹The “Bongdaesan Fire Squirrel”
The suspect was previously known as the “Bongdaesan Fire Squirrel,” responsible for repeatedly setting fires in Bongdae Mountain in Dong-gu, Ulsan.
From 1994 to 2011, he allegedly started more than 90 wildfires in the area, causing severe forest damage and public anxiety.
At the time, authorities even offered a reward of up to 300 million won for information leading to his arrest.
🔹Arrested in 2011 and Sentenced to 10 Years
The suspect was eventually arrested in March 2011.
He was prosecuted for setting 37 fires between 2005 and 2011 and received a 10-year prison sentence.
Because the statute of limitations for arson was seven years, earlier offenses could not be included in the charges.
He was also ordered to pay approximately 420 million won in damages following a civil lawsuit filed by the Dong-gu District Office in Ulsan.
🔹Reoffended After Release
After being released from prison in 2021, the man reportedly moved to Hamyang, his hometown, several years ago.
Police identified him through joint forensic investigation, CCTV footage analysis, and search warrants before arresting him on March 13.
During questioning, he reportedly admitted that watching news reports about wildfires triggered an urge to set fires again.
Police plan to send the case to prosecutors after investigating whether he committed additional crimes.
🔹First Major Wildfire of the Year
The wildfire believed to have been set by the suspect broke out on February 21 in Macheon-myeon, Hamyang County.
Strong winds caused the fire to spread rapidly, making firefighting efforts difficult.
Authorities estimate that approximately 234 hectares of forest—equivalent to about 327 soccer fields—were burned.
One greenhouse and a farming shelter were also destroyed.
