[26.05.05] Gwangju Night Stabbing Teen Girl Killed Man in His 20s Arrested
📍Victim chased while returning home…Suspect states “Committed impulsively while contemplating suicide”
A tragic incident occurred in which a teenage female student was killed and another student was seriously injured due to a knife attack that took place late at night on a pedestrian walkway in the city center of Gwangju.
The suspect fled immediately after committing the crime but was arrested approximately 11 hours later. As it has been confirmed that there was no relationship whatsoever between the suspect and the victims, police are proceeding with the investigation while placing weight on the possibility that this was a so-called “random-motive crime.”
In particular, the fact that even a student who attempted to provide help during the incident became a victim has further intensified the shock of the case.

🔹 Fatal crime that occurred on a late-night urban pedestrian path
At approximately 12:11 a.m. on May 5, a knife attack targeting high school students occurred on a pedestrian walkway near a university in Wolgye-dong, Gwangsan District, Gwangju.
This area is adjacent to a university and residential zones, so there is a steady flow of pedestrians during the daytime; however, because there are not many commercial facilities, foot traffic significantly decreases during late-night hours. At the time of the incident, the surroundings were also sparsely populated, making immediate intervention or rescue difficult.
According to police, the suspect, a 24-year-old man surnamed Jang, noticed a 17-year-old second-year high school student (identified as victim A) who was walking home alone and followed her from a short distance before committing the crime.
After sensing danger, victim A attempted to flee while shouting, “Help me,” but Jang increased his speed and pursued her, eventually attacking her at close range with a knife.
In particular, multiple attacks were carried out targeting vital areas such as the neck and upper body, resulting in fatal injuries within a short period of time.
Victim A was found at the scene with severe injuries and was transported to a hospital, but ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
🔹 Student who attempted rescue also attacked…tense situation at scene
At the time of the incident, another second-year high school student, identified as B (17), who happened to be passing nearby, heard victim A’s screams and approached the scene to check the situation.
B was on a phone call with an acquaintance and reportedly said, “I hear someone asking for help,” before changing direction and moving toward the location.
However, by the time he arrived, the situation had already become critical, and immediately after attacking victim A, Jang also swung the knife at B.
While fleeing, B conveyed the situation to the person on the phone, saying, “The attacker is chasing me,” and “I’ve been stabbed.”
During this process, he sustained serious injuries, including wounds to the neck area, and significant bleeding was reported.
B was later transported to a hospital and underwent emergency surgery. Although his life is not in danger, he remains in need of further medical treatment.
Police confirmed that the two victims attended different schools and had no prior acquaintance with each other before the incident.
🔹 Escape involved calculated movement…switching between car and taxi
Immediately after committing the crime, Jang attempted to leave the scene quickly by using a car, and then switched to a taxi to alter his route of movement.
Police believe this behavior reflects an intention to evade tracking.
Following the incident, police secured nearby CCTV footage and conducted a focused analysis of movement routes by time zone.
Through this process, it was confirmed that Jang had passed through specific areas after the crime, and based on this, the scope of the search was gradually narrowed.
Ultimately, approximately 11 hours and 10 minutes after the incident, at around 11:24 a.m. that day, Jang was arrested near his residence.
It was reported that he did not resist at the time of arrest.
Jang was residing in a studio apartment-dense area in Gwangsan District, and no prior criminal record has been identified so far.
However, the knife used in the crime is presumed to have been discarded during the escape, and police are continuing search efforts to recover it.
🔹 “Contemplating suicide”…intersection of impulsivity and planning
During police questioning, Jang stated regarding his motive, “Life was not enjoyable, and I had been thinking about ending my life.”
He also explained, “I brought a knife that I had purchased and kept previously, and after seeing a stranger pass by, I committed the crime impulsively.”
Investigation results indicate that prior to the crime, Jang wandered around the area for a certain period while observing his surroundings, encountered the victim once, and then decided to carry out the attack when he saw her again.
Based on these statements and behavioral patterns, police consider it more likely to be a “random-motive crime” targeting an unspecified individual rather than a premeditated crime targeting a specific person.
However, given that he prepared a weapon in advance and committed the crime near his own living area, the possibility that a certain degree of planning was involved has not been ruled out.
🔹 No prior connection…profilers and forensics deployed simultaneously
So far, no personal relationship or conflict between the suspect and the victims has been identified.
It has been determined that the victims share no common factors other than passing through the same location at the same time.
Police plan to deploy criminal profilers to more clearly determine the nature of the case.
In addition, digital forensic analysis of Jang’s mobile phone is being conducted to comprehensively examine search history, movement routes, and psychological state before and after the crime.
In particular, whether there were any warning signs or concerning online activities prior to the crime is also a key focus of the investigation.
Based on the collected data, police intend to verify the credibility of the suspect’s statements and proceed with follow-up procedures, including applying for an arrest warrant.
🔹 Shock in local community…calls for nighttime safety measures grow
This incident has delivered significant shock to the local community, as it was a random act of violence that occurred on a pedestrian path in the city during late-night hours.
In particular, as it became known that the victims were teenagers, public anxiety is rapidly spreading, and concerns about nighttime pedestrian safety are increasing.
Residents have responded by saying, “We always felt the area was dangerous at night because there are few people,” and demands for practical safety measures such as increased patrols and expanded CCTV coverage are continuing.
The education sector and local political circles have also successively expressed condolences and emphasized the need to strengthen student protection systems.
Preliminary candidates in the education superintendent election pledged to establish concrete measures, stating that “it is urgent to build a comprehensive safety network for students, including areas outside of school.”
