Controversy Grows Over Pocheon Reservist Death… YouTuber Claims “High-Intensity Outdoor Training in 30°C Heat”

📍After a man in his 20s died from cardiac arrest during reservist training in Pocheon, a YouTuber who participated in the same division’s exercise raised concerns about harsh training conditions and poor safety management

Controversy is growing after a man in his 20s died from cardiac arrest during reservist training at a military site in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province, while a YouTuber who participated in training under the same army division publicly described the conditions and safety management during the exercise. The YouTuber claimed reservists endured long mountain maneuvers, extended outdoor standby periods, and limited supplies in temperatures reaching 30 degrees Celsius. The South Korean Army, however, stated that some of the claims were inaccurate. Debate is continuing over the intensity of the training and the military’s reservist safety measures.

🔹 YouTuber Claims Training Conditions Were “Virtually Identical” to Unit Where Death Occurred
YouTuber Kim Tor uploaded a video titled “I Was Also at the Training Where the Recent Reservist Death Occurred” on his YouTube channel on May 17, explaining the situation during the exercise.

Kim Tor said he participated in the Ssangyong training exercise conducted by the Army’s 203rd Brigade of the 73rd Division from May 12 to 14. Although the death occurred in the division’s 206th Brigade, he claimed the training content and intensity were effectively the same.

He stated that the exercise differed from ordinary reservist mobilization training because it involved actual outdoor maneuver operations, including tent camping, mountain reconnaissance, and long hours of outdoor standby.

He further argued that forcing ordinary reservists, many of whom do not regularly train physically, into sudden high-intensity mountain exercises created significant safety risks.

🔹 “Reservists Repeatedly Climbed Steep Mountain Trails Wearing Full Gear in 30°C Heat”
Kim Tor claimed the second day of training, when the fatal incident occurred, involved especially harsh conditions.

He stated that reservists repeatedly climbed steep mountain trails while wearing helmets, carrying rifles, and carrying military packs in temperatures reaching 30 degrees Celsius.

According to him, reservists also carried assault backpacks while moving along steep hiking paths for 30 to 40 minutes at a time.

He argued that imposing such demanding exercises on ordinary reservists without any adaptation period inevitably increased the risk of accidents.

Kim Tor added that many reservists appeared physically exhausted during the training, saying the combination of heat, movement, and extended waiting periods created severe physical strain.

🔹 Claims of “One Bottle of Water and Three Hours of Outdoor Waiting”
Kim Tor also criticized the supply and waiting conditions during the exercise.

He claimed that reservists were provided with only a single 500-milliliter bottle of water and were later assigned to defensive positions in groups of four, where they remained standing under direct sunlight for more than three hours.

He stated that there was insufficient rest and inadequate additional supplies during the prolonged outdoor standby periods.

Kim Tor also revealed photos showing insect bites on his hands, claiming that mosquitoes and bugs were extremely severe in the field positions. He further alleged that some reservists were warned they could be removed from training if they took off their helmets.

🔹 Claims of Drone Surveillance and Orders to Rewear Helmets
Kim Tor also raised allegations involving drone monitoring during the exercise.

He claimed that after some reservists briefly removed their helmets because of the heat, active-duty soldiers informed them that the division commander had observed the reservists through a drone and ordered them to put their helmets and rifles back on.

He criticized what he described as excessive control over reservists who were only attempting to cope with the extreme heat.

The Army denied the allegations, however, stating that the drone in question did not have video recording capabilities and that the division commander never issued any disciplinary orders regarding helmets or military posture.

🔹 Claims Reservists Were Not Properly Informed About Death Incident
Kim Tor further claimed that reservists participating in the exercise were never properly informed about the death during the training period.

He stated that he only learned about the reservist’s death from a friend while returning home after the exercise ended and said military officers never provided any official explanation during the training.

He added that he hoped the investigation would not simply conclude that the death resulted solely from a preexisting medical condition and called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

🔹 Army Rejects Claims About Expanded Training and Drone Monitoring
The Army officially rejected several of the YouTuber’s claims.

Regarding allegations that the exercise was originally planned for only one brigade before being abruptly expanded to include two brigades, the Army stated that participation by two brigades had already been discussed during annual operational planning conducted last year.

The Army also denied claims regarding drone surveillance, explaining that the equipment lacked recording functions and that only the operator could view the live flight screen for control purposes.

Military officials added that although the division commander inspected the training site, no special disciplinary instructions regarding military posture or helmets were issued.

🔹 Man in His 20s Dies After Cardiac Arrest During Reservist Training
On May 13, a man in his 20s collapsed during reservist mobilization training at a military training ground in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province.

He was transported to a hospital while receiving CPR after suffering cardiac arrest but ultimately died.

Since the incident, debate has continued online regarding the intensity of the training and the military’s reservist safety management system. Some critics have argued that conducting high-intensity outdoor maneuver exercises during extreme heat may not be appropriate for ordinary reservists.

One-line summary : After a reservist in his 20s died during training in Pocheon, controversy intensified as a YouTuber who participated in the same division’s exercise alleged harsh heat conditions and poor safety management.
