[26.04.06] Daegu Suitcase Body Case: Son-in-law Beats Mother-in-law for 12 Hours, Wife Arrested
📍Assault continued with repeated breaks and smoking…Daughter present but failed to intervene
The full details of the so-called “suitcase body case” in Daegu have been revealed. A man in his 20s was found to have assaulted his mother-in-law for approximately 12 hours before her death and then placed her body in a suitcase and abandoned it. Despite the victim’s repeated complaints of pain during the assault, the violence did not stop, and it was also confirmed that the daughter, who was present at the scene, did not intervene, adding to the shock.

🔹 Prolonged assault lasting through the night…repeated acts of violence
According to police, suspect A assaulted his mother-in-law B at their residence in Jung-gu, Daegu, from late night on March 17 through the following morning, for approximately 12 hours. The violence was not a single incident but continued over a long period, increasing the severity of the case. During the investigation, it was confirmed that A repeatedly stopped the assault, took breaks or smoked, and then resumed the violence. During this time, victim B continuously complained of pain, but the assault ultimately did not stop.
🔹 Body concealed and abandoned without reporting after death
After the victim died, A did not request emergency assistance or report the incident and instead attempted to conceal the crime. At around 10 a.m. on March 18, he placed B’s body into a suitcase and moved it to a nearby stream in Sincheon, where he abandoned it. The suitcase was large enough to contain an adult body and reportedly appeared no different from an ordinary travel bag from the outside. The case came to light after a passerby reported it as suspicious, and police immediately launched an investigation and identified the suspects.
🔹 Daughter present at the scene…failed to intervene in the assault
It was confirmed that the victim’s daughter, C, who is also A’s wife, was present at the scene. However, she did not actively stop the prolonged assault or seek outside help. During police questioning, C stated that she “was too afraid of her husband’s violence to report it,” but investigators determined that there were no physical restraints or external restrictions preventing her from acting. As a result, her role was judged seriously, extending beyond passive inaction to involvement in the disposal of the body.
🔹 Extension of domestic violence…victim expanded to mother-in-law
Police investigations revealed that A had previously assaulted his wife. After B began living with the couple, the violence extended to her as well. B had reportedly moved in with the couple in February after they relocated. At the time she was found, severe bruises and injuries were observed across her face and body. An autopsy confirmed multiple fractures in the ribs, pelvis, and head, indicating repeated and strong physical impacts beyond a simple assault.
🔹 Motive statements and contradictory attitude
A reportedly stated that he became angry because the victim was “making noise and not organizing things properly.” However, during the police investigation, he also made statements such as “I treated my wife and mother-in-law well” and “I still love my wife,” showing an attitude that contradicted the brutality of the crime. These statements have raised further controversy regarding his awareness of the crime and sense of responsibility.
🔹 Claims of disability raised, but credibility questioned
Both A and C claimed that they had disabilities, but acquaintances and related individuals stated that there were no issues with communication or daily life. Authorities are continuing to assess these claims based on objective facts, and the possibility of additional procedures such as psychiatric evaluations has been raised.
🔹 Court: “Severity of the crime is significant”…both arrested
The court issued an arrest warrant for A, determining that the prolonged assault leading to the victim’s death constituted a serious crime. C was also arrested, as her failure to intervene and involvement in the disposal of the body were recognized. A is currently charged with killing a lineal ascendant and abandoning a body, while C faces charges of abandoning a body. The court is believed to have considered the seriousness of the crime and the risk of evidence destruction.
🔹 Police to review additional charges before prosecution
Police are currently conducting a detailed analysis of A’s mental state and the circumstances at the time of the crime, while also reviewing the possibility of additional charges. The case is expected to be forwarded to prosecutors around the 8th or 9th after supplementary investigation, and more detailed facts and responsibilities are expected to be determined during prosecution and trial.
