Hanwha Aerospace Daejeon Plant Explosion Tragedy… Five Workers Killed, Renewed Questions Over Repeated Safety Failures

📍Explosion Suspected During Rocket Propellant Cleaning Process… Five Workers Killed and Two Injured, Authorities Launch Full-Scale Investigation

A major explosion at Hanwha Aerospace’s Daejeon facility, one of South Korea’s leading defense manufacturers, has left five workers dead and two others injured.

The explosion is believed to have occurred during a cleaning process related to rocket propellant production, and the blast completely destroyed one of the facility’s buildings. The incident has drawn significant public attention because the same plant experienced fatal explosions in both 2018 and 2019, raising renewed concerns about workplace safety management and accident prevention measures.

Police, labor authorities, and prosecutors have each formed dedicated investigation teams to determine the exact cause of the accident and establish responsibility.

🔹Massive Explosion Rocks Daejeon Facility, Thick Smoke Covers Area
The accident occurred at approximately 10:59 a.m. on June 1 at Hanwha Aerospace’s Daejeon business site in Oesam-dong, Yuseong District, Daejeon.

Witnesses reported hearing a powerful explosion, followed by large plumes of dark smoke rising into the sky.

Emergency services received more than 30 reports within a short period, with callers reporting loud blasts and heavy smoke coming from the factory complex.

Fire authorities issued a Level 1 emergency response at 11:17 a.m. and dispatched more than 100 firefighters and over 30 pieces of equipment to the scene.

Firefighters worked to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby facilities. Major flames were brought under control within approximately 50 minutes, and the fire was completely extinguished at 1:07 p.m. The emergency response level was lifted one minute later.

The explosion destroyed an entire one-story building covering approximately 544 square meters. The blast was so powerful that much of the structure collapsed, leaving parts of the site unsafe for immediate entry.

🔹Five Workers Killed, Two Injured Including Young Contract Employees
Authorities confirmed that seven workers were present at the site when the explosion occurred.

Five workers lost their lives, while two others suffered injuries.

All of the deceased were production team employees working inside the affected facility. Among them were two contract workers in their 20s, while the remaining three were full-time employees, including two workers in their 50s and one in his 30s.

The victims were found inside the building where the explosion occurred.

The two injured workers managed to escape the facility on their own before emergency responders arrived.

One suffered severe burns over most of his body and remains hospitalized, while the other received treatment for minor injuries and was later discharged.

Hanwha Aerospace stated that all workers involved were wearing flame-resistant protective clothing and safety equipment in accordance with company regulations.

However, the scale of the explosion appears to have been so severe that protective equipment alone could not prevent casualties.

🔹Explosion Believed to Have Occurred in Propellant Cleaning Facility
Investigators believe the explosion originated in Building 56, commonly referred to as the “Cleaning Process Room.”

The facility is used to clean tools and equipment involved in rocket propellant production.

During the manufacturing process of rocket propulsion systems, various explosive compounds and propellant materials are handled. After production, residual substances must be removed from equipment and tools through specialized cleaning procedures.

During a joint briefing, a Hanwha Aerospace official explained that the explosion is believed to have occurred while workers were cleaning tools contaminated with explosive residue from the propellant manufacturing process.

The exact cause of the explosion, however, has not yet been determined.

Because much of the structure collapsed during the blast, investigators have not been able to fully access the site.

Authorities plan to conduct a detailed forensic examination with the National Forensic Service once the area is deemed safe.

🔹Questions Raised Over Safety Oversight and Inspection Systems
The accident has also renewed scrutiny over safety management practices at the facility.

According to fire authorities, the Daejeon plant underwent fire safety inspections in both 2025 and 2026.

However, inspections reportedly focused primarily on the main buildings within the complex.

The structure where the explosion occurred was classified as a relatively small facility. While it was subject to internal safety inspections, it was reportedly not required to submit inspection results directly to local fire authorities.

A fire official explained that the Daejeon complex consists of dozens of separate buildings, making comprehensive government inspections of every structure difficult.

As a result, experts have begun questioning whether facilities that handle hazardous and explosive materials should be subject to stricter external oversight regardless of building size.

🔹Hanwha Issues Apology, Pledges Support for Victims’ Families
Hanwha Group and Hanwha Aerospace released an official statement shortly after the accident, expressing condolences and apologizing for the tragedy.

The company stated that it was devastated by the loss of five valued employees and extended its deepest sympathies to the bereaved families.

The statement also expressed hopes for the speedy recovery of the injured workers and promised full support for medical treatment and assistance.

Company officials further apologized to the public and pledged to cooperate fully with authorities during the investigation.

During the briefing, Hanwha Aerospace representatives noted that significant investments had been made following the fatal accidents in 2018 and 2019 to automate processes and strengthen safety systems.

They stated that the process involved in the latest accident had previously been regarded as relatively low risk.

Nevertheless, the recurrence of fatal accidents at the same facility is expected to intensify criticism regarding the effectiveness of those safety improvements.

🔹Another Tragedy at a Site With a History of Fatal Explosions
The latest accident has drawn particular attention because it is not the first deadly explosion at the Daejeon facility.

In May 2018, an explosion occurred during a propellant-related operation.

Two workers died at the scene, while three others later succumbed to severe burn injuries, bringing the death toll to five.

Less than a year later, in February 2019, another explosion and fire occurred in a propulsion-system processing building known as Building 70.

Three workers were killed in that incident.

Both previous accidents involved processes related to propulsion and explosive materials, leading to widespread criticism of safety management practices.

Now, in 2026, another explosion has claimed five more lives.

Including the latest tragedy, a total of 13 workers have died in explosion-related accidents at the Daejeon facility since 2018.

Industry observers argue that stronger and more comprehensive safety measures are urgently needed at facilities handling high-risk materials.

🔹Police, Labor Ministry, and Prosecutors Launch Comprehensive Investigation
Multiple government agencies have launched extensive investigations into the accident.

Police established a dedicated task force to determine the cause of the explosion and whether safety regulations were properly followed.

The Ministry of Employment and Labor dispatched senior industrial safety officials to the site and immediately ordered a suspension of operations related to the affected process.

Authorities are also examining potential violations of occupational safety regulations and whether the Serious Accidents Punishment Act may apply.

Meanwhile, the Daejeon District Prosecutors’ Office formed a special investigation team led by the chief prosecutor of its Criminal Division 4.

The team consists of three prosecutors and six investigators and will work closely with police, labor authorities, and fire officials.

Prosecutors stated that they would thoroughly investigate the cause of the accident, determine responsibility, and ensure support measures for victims and their families.

Given that the accident occurred at a key national defense production facility, its impact is expected to be significant. As investigations progress, public scrutiny regarding safety management failures and legal accountability is likely to intensify.
