Kim Se-ui’s Detention Review Request Rejected; Court Rules Continued Detention Justified

Kim Se-ui, the head of the YouTube channel Garo Sero Institute, who was arrested on charges of spreading false information and defaming actor Kim Soo-hyun, has failed in his attempt to challenge the legality of his detention. Investigators allege that Kim repeatedly disseminated claims suggesting that Kim Soo-hyun had been involved in a years-long relationship with Kim Sae-ron while she was still a minor, and that pressure from Kim Soo-hyun’s side regarding debt repayment contributed to circumstances surrounding Kim Sae-ron’s death.

Authorities believe that these allegations were false and were nevertheless publicly distributed to a broad audience, causing serious damage to Kim Soo-hyun’s reputation and social standing.

Investigators further contend that Kim continuously used press conferences, live YouTube broadcasts, and various video content platforms to amplify and distribute the allegations.

According to investigators, individuals associated with Kim allegedly created and released an audio file generated using AI technology, making it appear as though Kim Sae-ron herself had personally made the statements contained in the recording.

The audio reportedly included claims suggesting that Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Sae-ron first engaged in a sexual relationship during the winter vacation of her second year of middle school.

Investigators believe the recording was not an authentic voice recording of the deceased actress but rather an artificially generated audio file created through AI technology. Prosecutors argue that distributing such material constituted an act of defamation against Kim Soo-hyun.

In addition to the AI-generated audio allegations, authorities are also examining claims that certain recordings and KakaoTalk conversation records related to Kim Sae-ron may have been altered or manipulated.

The authenticity of these materials is expected to become a significant issue as the case proceeds through the judicial process.

🔹 Arrest Approved Over Concerns of Evidence Destruction and Flight Risk
Earlier, the Gangnam Police Station in Seoul sought an arrest warrant for Kim on charges including defamation, intimidation, attempted coercion, and violations of laws governing sexual crimes.

Following supplementary investigations, prosecutors formally requested an arrest warrant from the court on August 20.

The court subsequently approved the warrant on August 26.

At the time, the court explained that the warrant had been issued because there were concerns that Kim could destroy evidence and that there was a risk of flight.

Kim further argued that his detention could create the impression that all of the claims made by him and Kim Sae-ron’s family were false.

He told reporters, “The detention should be lifted as soon as possible so that I can actively respond to these issues.”

Kim maintained that he should be given an opportunity to defend himself outside detention and continue addressing what he characterized as misinformation surrounding the case.

Nevertheless, the court rejected these arguments and ultimately decided that continued detention remained necessary.
